Shaykh Rabee’ ibn Haadee Al-Madkhalee
Question: May Allaah treat you well. Our Shaykh, may Allaah preserve you. Many are those whom we had good thought about and deemed them to be from the protectors of the Salafee Da’wah and the callers to it, then it became clear to us that they are from the opposers of it. So what are the reasons which lead to that in your view? We heard something of this within your speech, however, (we present the question) so that it will not be said that we had no concern for the questions of some of the brothers.
Answer: From the reasons for it—and the refuge is with Allaah—is desires. A person may know the truth and know its people and know its evidences; then he changes. What is the reason? The reason is misguidance form Allaah the Blessed and High (i.e., Allaah allowing him to stray). He whom Allaah guides there is not to misguide and he whom Allaah allows to stray there is no guidance for him. The people of desires only come by way of desires.
أَفَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَهَهُ هَوَاهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ وَخَتَمَ عَلَى سَمْعِهِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَجَعَلَ عَلَى بَصَرِهِ غِشَاوَةً
Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his Ilah (god), and Allaah knowing (him as such), left him astray, and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. (Al-Jathiyah 45:23)
Al-Hawaa الهوى (i.e., desires) يهوي causes the person to sink and makes him deviate from the path. Also, from the reasons is the love of material things. The love of material things; love of status and position. He sees the people of Salafiyyah to be poor and he wants to be from the great ones; he wants to have wealth; he wants position; and so he changes. May Allaah bless you. Allaahu Akbar! (Due to) desires which are followed and greed which is obeyed. The Prophet, upon him be prayers ad peace, said:
اتقوا فتنا كقطع الليل المظلم يمسي الرجل مؤمنا و يصبح كافرا أو يصبح مؤمنا و يمسي كافرا يبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا
Fear the Fitnah which is like a patch of a dark night. A man will go into the evening as a believer and wake up in the morning as a Kaafir. Or he will wake up in the morning as a believer and go into the evening as a Kaafir; and he will sell his religion for a portion of the Dunyaa.
Look. He goes into the evening as a believer and in the morning he changes. We don’t say that he is a Kaafir. He (may) wake up in the morning as an innovator! A Hizbee! A Murji’ee! A Qadaree! And so on; all for the sake of desires and for the sake of the love of wealth. He sells his religion for a portion of the Dunyaa.
He sees a group from the groups; they have wealth; they have position, and so on, while they (he and the Salafees) are a poor group, they do not have position or wealth, and he wants to enjoy the life of this world, so desires and the love of the Dunyaa take him away. Allaahu Akbar!
Within the Hadeeth, may Allaah bless you, which comes to mind as it relates to this issue:
ما ذئبان أرسلا في زريبة غنم بأفسد لها من حرص المرء على المال والشرف لدينه
Two wolves let loose in a sheep’s pen in not more dangerous than the craving of wealth and status is to a person’s religion.
The love of wealth; craving wealth, and craving status corrupts the religion of a person greatly and destroys him just as two hungry wolves which are let loose in a sheep’s pen. What will remain from them (the sheep)?! They will be annihilated and eaten. Similarly, this person, nothing will remain from his religion—and the refuge is with Allaah—except that which Allaah wills. May Allaah give you life.
